Drupal 6 and Views Module
Views module permits to create lists of nodes (but not only nodes) which can be customized in many different ways.
The module is able to change some of the lists that Drupal core modules already show to the user, and which are hard-coded.
The module also uses some custom hooks that permits the integration with third party modules.
